Overview

History
The excitement of the dawn of the industrial age and the fever of oil drilling coincided in the boomtown of Bradford, Pennsylvania in 1881. Possibility was the backdrop for the formation of Kendall Refining, a small operation committed to supplying industry with kerosene, lubricants and greases designed for long wear.

At the turn of the century, Americans fell in love with the automobile. Challenged to meet the incredible consumer automotive demand, Kendall Motor Oil created the first research and development unit in Pennsylvania. As a result, Kendall Motor Oil developed the first oil designated for winter use and the first motor oil to help protect engines for an unprecedented 2,000 miles, compared to the then current standard of 500-1,000 miles.

The twenties and thirties not only expanded Kendall Motor Oil’s customer base to include the aviation and military industries, but also yielded another precedent in the lubricants industry. Kendall Motor Oil developed the first pre-packaged, factory-sealed one-quart can of oil. This revolutionary change offered real marketing opportunities as well as safety and quality-assurance measures for the time. Other major oil companies began to adopt similar packaging, and the packaging later earned Kendall Motor Oil a place in the prestigious “Packaging Hall of Fame” in 1953.

Some of Kendall Motor Oil’s other product innovations include:

  • 1953 – First All Weather SAE 10W-30 offered to consumers
  • 1973 – Introduction of the distinctive white “Fun-L-Fil” plastic bottles
  • 1992 – White plastic bottles were replaced by black recyclable plastic bottles
